Lake Taupo is the largest freshwater lake in Australasia and the site of the world's largest volcanic eruption in the last 5,000 years. The area is a volcanic wonderland, home to the Tongariro National Park (more on this later) and the inspiration behind Mount Doom in The Lord of the Rings films.
