Koala Village.

My time on Magnetic Island can best be characterized as long and rainy. I was meant to spend only a day there, but the weather was so wet - and I mean monsoon torrential downpour all day and night wet - that the roads to Cairns were flooded. So instead I spent three days on Maggie Island, much of it curled up in my hostel dorm with a book.

I did get a small window of overcast but dry skies in which I went to Bungalow Bay Koala Village to check out some of Australia's rare and famous animals. How cute is the echidna! It looks like a mix between a porcupine and hedgehog. And who knew koalas scratched themselves like a dog?

Mexican lunch

I have been craving Mexican food for weeks now, but it seems burritos and margaritas have yet to cross over into this country. And of all places I found a Mexican restaurant on Magnetic Island, a small island of only 2,000 residents off the coast of Townsville. Not exactly your traditional quesadilla, but the beans, cheese, and guac was good enough for me.

Whitsundays

Last weekend I had the incredible opportunity to spend three days aboard Wings III sailing and snorkeling the Whitsunday Islands. The fish! The coral! The seasickness! I positive now the best way to diet is by spending time on a sailboat. The chef onboard served us food for kings: BBQ, pastas, salads, fresh fruit and veggies, carrot cake and chocolate cookies, but by day two I was so queasy from the rocking I couldn't eat! And this never happens. I am never not hungry.

Highlights from the trip:

  • scuba diving for the first time off of Hook Island
  • walking on the ocean floor
  • seeing Nemo
  • chasing sting rays and reef sharks in the shallow waters of Whitehaven Beach
  • the sand at Whitehaven, the most beautiful and soft sand I have ever seen
  • stinger suits!
  • stargazing - no better way to see the galaxy than on a sailboat in the middle of the ocean
  • cup of jo before a 7 a.m. snorkel
